Found out more interesting history when paying the last tribute to Dato Sri 陈火炎 last night at his last dwelling house. He has been a famous Chinese leader and his contribution to the society especially Penang and Chinese education had been priceless. Still remember a mere 13 yrs ago, when grandpa passed away, he was the very first & the only friend who came to see grandpa for the one last time before the "masuk coffin" ceremony. (i dunno what english word to call la ok). as per Chinese tradition, no one would come before the ceremony due to pantang-larangs, but he came and walked straight to where the body lied peacefully to pay his last tribute. (to be honest, during that time i didn't even dare to walk near alone despite he is my own ah gong). we (among the grandchildren) were told to address him as Hoay Eam Pek. I respected him for being a dear friend to my grandparents, so i had a vivid impression bout him ever since then. i accompanied grandma there yesterday eve...
