Mamula Moon (Hawaiian Song)

"Mamula Moon" by Felix Mendelssohn

Title: Mamula Moon
Artist: Felix Mendelssohn & His Hawaiian Serenaders
Album: Paradise Isle
Year: 1947
Track number: 14
Duration: 00:02:50

one day i walked along
a moonlit island shore
and soon i heard a song
i've never heard before

i said who can it be
to sing so tenderly
and saw a dust he made
with lonely serenade

mamula moon
shine high above the southern sea
and like my love
say form again to me

we said goodbye
beside the blue lagoon
alone am i
with you mamula moon

i waved my hand
the grey ship sailed across the bay
on golden sand
that might i melt to pray

that i might see
my love returning soon
still true to me
and you mamula moon

Since my mama asked me to search this song for her the other day after she heard it from somewhere, so i thought of posting it here to share out. Only Malaysian would be more familiar with the melody of this song i supposed? and of course, those who listen to oldies or Hawaiian songs :) I've been browsing the web for these 3 songs - Terang Bulan, Mamula Moon & Negaraku, and found some information bout them. Not in-depth one though, you know, i don't like history. And here's what i found...

According to records there are two sources relating to the origin of the National Anthem before the song Negaraku became the National Anthem of Malaysia. The same tune was once the State Anthem of Perak and it was also the tune of a very popular contemporary song entitled "Terang Bulan".

History has it that the Negaraku was adapted from the state anthem of Perak, which had a similar melody to the keroncong-influenced "Terang Bulan", a popular song in the 1930s in Indonesia and Malaya.

The history of how the National Anthem was composed is available
here. It does not reference this Hawaiian song.
Seeing as how both "Terang Bulan" and "Mamula Moon" talk about the moon…maybe they have the same roots.

Negaraku
Negaraku
Tanah tumpahnya darahku
Rakyat hidup bersatu dan maju
Rahmat bahagia
Tuhan kurniakan
Raja kita selamat bertakhta
Rahmat bahagia
Tuhan kurniakan
Raja kita selamat bertakhta
